Core Subjects

Core Subjects in order to guide the applicants in their choice of departments and enhance their chances of being admitted, we have summarized the subjects required by each department. (View table) The candidates are expected to obtain credits in the O’Level examination in these subjects in no more than two sittings. These requirements are the barest minimum and candidates that possess a higher number of credit passes have a better chance of being admitted.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

1. FSB 001 – BIOLOGY

First Semester— Principles of Modern Biology
The scope of Biology, living things, plant and animals compared: the cell as basic unit of organization. Unicellular and multi-cellular organisms. Diversity, Classification of Tissues and Organs. Plants as primary producers, Photosynthesis, Association between organisms: Consumers, Parasites and symbioses. Introduction to ecology. Examples of ecosystems. Basis of inheritance. Biology in everyday life. Biology in the service of man. JAMB lessons and tutorials.

Second Semester—Structure and Function
Structure and function of plants and animals, indigestion and digestion, Distribution of water and food, vascular transport system, water/mineral balance in plants and animals. Transpiration and Respiration, Growth, Movements and Hydroskeleton, Muscular and Skeletal Support tissues, reproduction, Integration and Coordination. Hormonal and Nervous systems. Summary and physiological problems in plants and animals.

2. CHM 001 — CHEMISTRY

First Semester 
Measurements: Basic concepts of matter. Separation of mixtures and purification of substances. Atomic structure; Periodic classification of elements; Chemical Nomenclature of Inorganic compounds; Chemical combination — Oxidation and reduction, Stoichiometry, Calculations involving Chemical Equations, Kinetic Theory of Matter. JAMB lessons and tutorials.

Second Semester
Solutions and solubility; Acids; Bases and Salts; Electrolysis; Energy Changes; Rates of Reactions; Chemical Equilibra; Organic Chemistry I; Organic Chemistry II; Nuclear Chemistry.

3. PHY 030 — PHYSICS (FIRST & SECOND SEMESTER)

Kinetics, Dynamics, Relativity, Structure and prosperities of matter; Thermometry and Calorimetry; Kinetic theory of gases; Heat, Electromagnetism, Nature of waves, sound, light; structure of the atom. JAMB lessons and tutorials.

4. MTH 010 – MATHEMATICS

MTH010.1 
Elementary set theory, Functions and relations, Graphs of Linear, Quadratic, Cubic and Rational functions; Linear, Quadratic and Simultaneous, equations and their solutions. JAMB lessons and tutorials.

MTH 010.2
Algebraic expressions, Evaluation and factorization, Indices, Logarithms and Surds. Sequences and series — A.P. and G.P. Two-dimensional Trigonometry and Identities. Two dimensional Rectangular co-ordinate system — straight line and circles. Limits and continuity of functions of a single real variable, Differentiation and Integration. Elementary Statistics. Vectors-Composition and resolution of forces and velocities, Newton’s Laws of motion.

5. HUM 050: ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE

• Literature

Study Skills and Methods

These comprise:

a) Study Skills: i) Time vs. Study (ii) Human & Material Resources — Administrative and Teaching Staff, Student Study Groups etc. Study spaces, the library. Texts and Supplementary Materials esp. Dictionary. (iii) Listening and Reading Comprehension Skills (iv) Note taking and Note Making. (v) Assessment and Evaluation — Tests, Assignments and Exams — Skills for handling these.
b) Methods: (i) Listening & Reading (ii) Note—Making and its uses. (iii) Tests, Assignments and Exams — used as means to aim and target of study.

Oral communication

a) Sound segments — vowels and consonants b) The Syllable and Stress c) Intonation d) Practical Exercises — Various Speech Tasks

 Grammar & Usage

i) Morphology, (ii) Content/Lexical Words — Noun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb; (iii) Grammatical Structural Words — Pronoun, Preposition, Article, Conjunction, Auxiliary Verb; (iv) Sentence Structure and the various sentence types — Simple, Compound, Multiple complex. (Reading text to exemplify and supplement).

Writing Skills & Comprehension

a) Writing Skills — Continuous Prose Writing: Components -(i) Content (ii) Organization (iii) Expression (iv) Accuracy (Writing Tasks).
b) Comprehension — Requisite skills — (i) Adequate understanding of Text — deriving from skimming, scanning, use of key words — Drafting, Cross-checking and final writing of answers.

Literature

Literature (mainly as reinforcement of Grammar and usage).

a) What Literature is: Primary aim — enjoyment + lesson; secondary aim — reinforcement of language use.
b) Elements — Author theme, plot, storyline, setting, characters and language. c) Composition: Introduction, development, conflict, climax, denouncement/resolution d) Types/Genre — Poetry, Drama, Prose e) Text (i) Poetry – An anthology of simple interesting poems; (ii) Drama -Texts that suit the level and interest of students. At least one simple play per semester (iii) A collection of short stories or short novels of inoffensive content, and appropriate language choice and use.
